Meta's Muse is still heating up.

This newly launched personal AI Agent has become an important product in Meta's AI strategy this year. Unlike traditional chatbots, Muse is designed to be a smart assistant that can perform tasks for users: processing emails, shopping, planning journeys, and even continuous completion of complex operations in the background.

Meta has just announced a new move: the official launch of the open source project Muse Gadgets, a complete drop in hardware capabilities, enabling creators and developers around the world to build exclusive peripheral hardware for Muse.

According to the information published by Meta, developers can run Muse's firmware using the ESP32 development board, or connect to more complex devices using the Linux SDK, meaning that developers can not only deploy Muse interaction logic on low-cost microcontrollers, but also run Muse clients directly on more powerful edge computing devices such as Raspberry Pi 5.

The official list also includes a number of highly practical DIY formats:

  • Color Ink Display (E Ink Display): As a low-power desktop reminder or smart board, it displays Muse's synchronized schedules and tasks in real time.

  • HDMI Display Bar/Big Screen Expansion: Directly projecting Muse Agent interfaces or interactions to a TV or external monitor.

  • Touch on the handle: A handheld interaction terminal similar to the Muse Charm can be used to communicate with the Agent at any time without the use of smart glasses.

For developers who want to try it out, the next step is to start building their own Muse exteriors:

  • Access to gadgets.muse.ai to register and receive a personal API Token;

  • Connect development tools: Import the official GitHub code library into your usual AI programming proxy programs (such as Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot CLI, etc.) with the ability of Agentic Coding to quickly understand protocols and generate external drive code;

  • Solid-state brush and modulation: Brush the code into the ESP32 developer board or run the SDK client on a Linux/StreetMap device to complete a real-time two-way connection between the hardware terminal and Muse.

Meanwhile, Meta also launched an official device: Muse Home Link, a small device powered by USB-C that allows Muse to connect to your home network, thus communicating with smart home devices such as TVs, audio, and any HTTPS-enabled devices, allowing the AI Agent to get further into real-life scenarios.

Officials said that the first batch of 5,000 units of Muse Home Link has already been tested and is expected to start shipping in a few weeks, and will be distributed directly free of charge to eligible Muse subscriber experiences as long as the stock is in stock.

Asked why Meta would open-source this initiative, Wang said, "First of all, it's a fun thing to create tools of all kinds".

Second, we want to unleash the creativity of developers and allow people to explore all kinds of new, even crazy ideas. We believe that Muse is at a special moment when it offers endless possibilities for people to create new hardware devices, and we look forward to seeing what they eventually come up with".

From this point of view, Meta seems to want Muse to be more than just an official product, but a platform that can be expanded.

When the project was released, it immediately attracted the attention of netizens, and even some netizens did well, and DIY came out with its own Muse device.

Networker Federico Viticci@viticci attempted to convert his Xteink e-ink reader into an ever-growing Muse accompanying display, on which Muse Calliope could display his image and display status updates.

"Muse App's setup process is so smooth that you can even have Muse upload content directly, or automate control of the information on the display. I really like this idea of design that is friendly to hackers and developers".

Another developer used a $50 SenseCAP Watcher device to create a smart hardware that connects a person's wine cellar. The user only needs to take a picture of the wine bottle label, and Muse can identify the wine and the year, and synchronize information to the person's wine cellar system via a Tailscale connector.

In the past, the development path for smart hardware was usually: company designs hardware, users buy hardware, users develop applications, but AI Agent may be moving to a different model: companies provide models and agent capabilities, and developers create various forms of devices.

In fact, there has been a lot of exploration of AI hardware in the industry, such as AI Pin, which has tried to replace mobile phone access through independent devices, but many products have been affected by issues such as functional limitations and interaction experiences. Today, manufacturers seem to be starting to change their minds: create a strong AI Agent directly and then let it into different hardware.

In the future, Muse may exist in smartphones, smart glasses, home devices, or even new hardware created by developers.

So how do you feel about this attempt at Meta, and welcome to comment and share in the comments section!
