Recently, U.S. netizens Frankie LaPenna, wearing a shield, drilled into a San Francisco underground boxing arena, facing a 1.73 m tall human-shaped robot, claiming to have completed three defeats of the robot.

Outside video shows that the first time he experimentally waved a few fists, then one foot knocked down the opponent, the second time the robot's rise began to become very difficult, the robot's one foot heavily knocked him over, hit the wall, and the audience shouted a loud shout. In the third round, the robot called Predator attacked heavily, eventually Frankie LaPenna knocked the robot over the ground and took the victory.

But in the more than forty-second segment that was the most widely circulated online, the challenge was ultimately because Frankie LaPenna was stabbed in the back of his leg and wrist, and the hand injury ended in a draw. The video ended with him lying on the ground, apparently with a robot winning the game.

The pair, which looks like a terminator robot called the EngineAI T800, was sold by Shenzhen Motors for a retail price of US$25,000, equivalent to RMB180,000. This figure is inexpensive across the industry and can be ordered directly from official flagship stores. It was originally manufactured for logistics warehouses, hotel services, sales and human collaboration as a general-purpose robot that could be purchased by a factory to move boxes.

Now that it has been enchanted, it stands in a corner, is being tested by a red-handed fist, and is surrounded online by 8 million people. But soon, the California State Athletic Commission sends a cease-and-desist order to the event's organizer, REK, which seems to announce the end of the event.

01.

It's not a robot, it's the guy who put the penalty in the hole.

This suspension order is very interesting.

Two of the prohibitions listed by the Commission from the Internet show that one prohibits the holding, promotion, or organization of any human-related boxing, MMA or boxing performances, and the other prohibits participation in any unlicensed boxing that involves humans.

The entire document does not contain a word to prohibit robots. Neither California nor the federal government has a law explicitly prohibiting betting between humans and robots, and the committee seized on an old-fashioned rule: as long as someone on the podium is human, they must have a certificate and must be approved by the State Sports Commission. The letter also contains criminal provisions, and unlicensed games directly constitute a misdemeanor.

Cix Liv, the host's CEO, responded by placing the misplacement on the stage. He sent a stop order to the social media platform, which is a reference to the fact that California sent us a stop order to fight robots without permission, which is obviously regulated as a badge.

He also said that despite regulators saying it was illegal, there is currently no law prohibiting it because the law says in black and white that the boxing took place between two people.

I welcome them to the courtroom to argue that human-like robots are not human beings.

This means that it is difficult to regulate the safety of such robots, so only those who enter are regulated.

The one who is not in a cage.

Returning to the enchanted T800, it wasn't entirely self-determined.

Behind the robot is an operator, who wears a VR headset, holds a handle, and controls it in real time on a control panel on the side of the scene. The operator, who overturns LaPenna's foot against the barrel wall, decides when to pull it out based on a real-time image.

Currently, there are two known modes of operation of the REK: the headset and the handle are one way, the normal game handle is the other way, and the early development phase of the Apple Vision Pro was used.

REK's own technical partners are quite frank that these robots are not autonomous, and the only AI is a trained balancing system that is responsible for keeping robots from falling when they wave their fists.

With the exception of REK, similar games around the world are basically human-controlled. For example, Ultimate Fighting Bots in the United States, the main player lowers the threshold of playing robots to a minimum, with one handle plus a network, and anyone can control a real humanoid robot in the game.

The difference between the two is that the actions of the former come from the real-time intent recognition of the person in the VR, the actions of the UFB come from a set of pre-trained actions, the operator uploads a video of themselves practicing fists or dancing, the system uses a robot to learn to translate it into a robot action, and the game is triggered with a stick.

Not only are similar competitions being held abroad, the REK TOKYO 2026 Main Station ticket in Japan is priced at 3000 yen, the normal seat is 5000 yen, the VIP seat near Taipei is 10,000 yen, the VIP seat in front is 20,000 yen, and the venue has a capacity of 350 people.

Shenzhen's Ultimate Robot Knockout Legend looks closest to a real professional league, which was announced in February 2026, with a schedule that runs through the end of the year. Thirty-two teams are currently competing, unified using the T800 robot. The championship prize is a ten-kilogram pure gold belt, valued at 10 million yuan.

However, in national and international media coverage, largely to capture traffic, this layer of human operators has been erased by race posters, broadcast footage, and reports.

The audience saw and angered by a 90-kilogram human-shaped robot's self-propelled hand, saw a redhead hit so badly that the spectators quickly exploded and the heat remained steady.

03.

An industrial enclosure on a street, and an audience of 100 people

If you look at REK's business, you'll see that it's not just a race anymore.

The company signed a two-story entrance on San Francisco's Van Ness Avenue, one floor along the street, with the landing window looking in from the street, which was the first physical store selling humanoid robots in the United States. The building was built at the beginning of the last century and was previously a mattress retailer, with about 550 square meters of space converted into workshops and exhibition halls.

The company's public statement is that guests can repair, buy, rent a doll, and take a class to learn how to run a robot for the first time.

The day-to-day operation of the store is like this: guests look at robots in the store during the day, talk about arguments, bargain, play games in the cages at night.

REK's outdoor propaganda is that they repair cars during the day, race cars at night, and the CEO's own X is like a human-robot punching is a race in a robotic circle.

The same business was dismantled into three cash flows.

The first match at the Temple Night Club in San Francisco sold close to 3,400 tickets, setting the venue's two-decade-long record, with Twitch co-founder Justin Kan playing UFC boss Hyder Amil, who controls the G1 Temple Tree.

One of them is selling robots and repairs, and there are 181,000 machines in the store, which can be rented by anyone.

Another part is a private race that costs $72,000 to complete the next round, three rounds, and robots don't have any protection to kill.

图片

The completeness of this business logic is enough to indicate that this is no longer a bulldozer, but a set of market-verified businesses.

And at the heart of this business, the same robot, which can be found in the store for $180,000, is also a fighting robot, and the market shock has led to more transmissions, more traffic, and more than a hundred spectators can be seated in a real-life stadium.

04.

The Economics of Monkeys

If you look at this business link, the logic of making money is quite clear, and it's a traffic-infested option.

With humans locked up in cages and robots to beat, natural band traffic, REK has created the highest volume of content ever transmitted by humans to robots. The rules are designed entirely around the content, people win on topics and people lose on topics.

The risk is also relatively controllable. LaPenna signed a waiver before the game, in black and white paper writing every death in the game, which is not the responsibility of REK, and can be broadcast live. Although he himself said after the game that the robot called the Predator could climb up and continue the attack, refining his strength, this exhaustion is more difficult to cope with than a heavy hit, and also injured him.

A later report in the San Francisco media added a detail that the red card had repeatedly suggested to REK to shoot robots, which he himself had wanted to do once in a while, to test the robot's gravitational pull of about 385 kilograms, and to fake it for on-site filming and streaming.

REK and LaPenna had enough of the theme and the traffic, and what the audience saw was a great performance. This technique can be called a rabbit economics, the organizers exchange content for traffic, the media exchange images for traffic with red, steel and blood are never the same unit in this transaction.

China insured it first

In the same timeline, China also witnessed an unexpected incident involving robots, but it was a completely different scenario.

In April of this year, at a high school gymnastics dance party in Phnom Penh, a robot suddenly turned around holding a female student next door, and the staff rushed to pull it off. The school returned to the scene due to too many drones causing signal interference.

In a scenic area in Xinjiang, a humanoid robot mistakenly injured an attending child during a performance. These scenes do not have a book of excuses, nor does the sports committee stare next to it, who loses after rubbing, how much losses and responsibility falls on which house, depending entirely on the number of people on the scene.

While there is no doubt that China's security and insurance system will be ahead of California in the unlikely future as the number of Chinese robots increases.

In April this year, a physically intelligent robot accidentally overturned in its application completed the country's first physically intelligent insurance claim, with the insurance company paying 5976 yuan. The amount is small to almost symbolic, but the answer to the responsibility problem first landed.

The California line, where regulation follows after accidents. The Chinese line, where the industry is small in the scale of accidents, is the third party responsible, the policy, the local legislation together.

06.

Who is responsible first and who is qualified to bring robots into the family?

After REK was suspended, the official REK Deathmatch schedule for October 9 in San Francisco was still pending.

The game's protagonist is no longer a human being, but a robot with two blades.

Liv's motto was to democratize MMA and allow ordinary people to experience bloody fighting without worrying about being hurt.

No one participated, no one was injured, but another problem followed. Without human participation, this kind of event is up to whoever it is, regardless of who sees it. This is both an opportunity for REK and a judgment that the entire industry is waiting for.

California handed the ticket to the guy who put it in the pot, and China handed the ticket to the guy who built the robot, the house with the robot. Both routes could make money, but only those players who took responsibility first might be eligible to let the robot into the house.
