It's the first time in the history of the world.

It's the end of an era of great distillation!

On September 2, Anthropic took a heavy hit, directly rewriting the API rules, completely cutting off the backs of a set of large models and distillers.

In the past, to save huge computational costs and lengthy training time, many companies have chosen to use top-of-the-line thinking processes through APIs to train their "small models" using these data.

But as of today, this possibility no longer exists.

Claude Fable 5.1 blocks "Thinking Blocks"

The release of Fable 5.1 by Anthropic is the most rigorous anti-distillation mechanism in history.

The central action is to lock the "thought block" to death.

What is a "thought block"?

Simply put, it's the process of CoT in the brain before AI gives you the ultimate answer.

图片

Claude's mind computation is a complex and parallel pathway through thought processes.

In an API call, Claude returns these reasoning steps to the user in the form of "thinking blocks".

In normal multi-round conversations, the developers send these thought blocks back to Claude along with system prompts, tools, and historical messages so that the model remembers the context and maintains the consistency of the conversation.

But the bias is the mechanism that has become an opportunity for distillers.

They found a huge flaw: as long as in a multi-round conversation, a stealthy modification of the context of the thought before and after the block (such as tampering with early system cues or historical messages) could break Claude's defense mechanism and even induce Claude to spew out the underlying reasoning logic it was hiding!

In response to this disorder, Anthropic reluctantly introduced a new rule in Fable 5.1 called "contextual consistency verification".

1. Back on the road, not bad.The API will now rigorously verify that the "thought blocks" sent back by the client are fully consistent with the system cues, tools and historical messages that originally generated them.

2. Move your hands and feet?As soon as the system discovers that the context has been modified, and even a small bit matches the failure, the API will return the error prompt directly and refuse service.

Moreover, to take care of legitimate developers who actually need to modify the context (e.g. need to compress the context length to save money), Anthropic offers a "non-strict model".

In this mode, your request can be passed, but the system will directly delete all "thought blocks"!

This trick is called a bottom-up paycheck.

When Claude is asked a more simple and a more difficult question, examples of faithful reasoning and motivational (unfaithful) reasoning are given.

How crazy is industrial distillation?

Is Anthropic going to be so hot, so strictly restricted?

The answer is yes, and it is absolutely necessary.

Since the current illegal distillation has evolved to an industrial scale.

Over the past year, Anthropic's security team has observed a staggering number of abuses.

These professional "distillation hackers" don't ask a few questions every day with one account, but use thousands of fake accounts, and through automated scripts, they go crazy at the end of the API day and night.

图片

Their methods of operation are highly covert and aggressive.

While Anthropic has long encrypted Claude's core thinking blocks, hackers have used techniques such as "injecting context" and "rewrite conversations".

This is like hypnotizing Claude, letting him actively decrypt and print out his own encrypted reasoning process in a logical mess.

As a result, many small parameter models, which have not experienced a zero-sum arithmetic stack and algorithmic innovation, have simply abandoned the idea of top-notch AI solutions to achieve performance overhead.

More alarmingly, this practice directly touched the red line, causing the collapse of security.

The biggest risk of AI getting out of control

If the loss of business interests only makes Anthropic "meat pain", then the "deprivation of capability and security" creates fear in the entire AI security community.

This is the central motivation behind the Anthropic decision to kill in pain.

It is well known that large models such as Claude, GPT-4, while having extremely high IQ, also received extremely rigorous "value alignment" and security training. They knew they could not teach people to make bombs, could not write malicious blackmail software, could not make hate speech.

This dual-binding of the "Capacity + Safety Shield" was created by large AI companies at a cost of tens of millions of dollars to counter RLHF and red and blue.

图片

However, the distillation model perfectly avoided this safety net!

When distillers forcibly adopted Claude's "thinking blocks" by modifying the context, they only extracted the "reasonableness" of that part of the high IQ, but could not inherit the underlying security.

It was like an evil organization that cloned Einstein's intellect but lacked Einstein's sense of morality and compassion.

Unsurprisingly, systems trained with this illegal distillation method will inherit advanced logic and coding capabilities that they should not have.

However, since they are themselves a "low-security, weak-guard" underlying model, they do not hesitate to respond to requests from hackers to generate cyber-attack scripts or assist in the development of bioweapons.

"The lack of capability and security is the biggest risk to AI today".

New rules: Who will be affected?

Will this strike affect the real developers?

No worries, Anthropic has adopted an accurate "phase-by-phase execution" strategy that seeks to minimize misconduct.

The first was "New Account".

According to official documents, this restriction is the first to be cut off from new accounts that are most focused on abuse. For the Fable 5.1 model, the update only applies to new API accounts created after 12:00:00 AM UTC on August 31, 2026.

The following people can rest assured that you are completely unaffected.

1. Existing API accountsCurrent accounts on Fable 5.1 are currently unaffected. This gives legitimate developers ample time to adjust.

2. Consumers in generalIf you're just using the web version of Claude.ai, or you're a C-end user of official products like Claude Code, Claude Cowork, or you're regularly chatting through third-party packages, you won't be bothered by anything.

What should you pay attention to for affected API developers?

If you happen to use the technique of "rewrite early rounds in the middle of a conversation" in your previous application integration (such as compression of context to save money, or forcing new system reminders in the middle of a conversation), you need to start adjusting your code logic right away.

To cope with this change, Anthropic has provided a complete migration guide. Developers have two options.

Option one: keep the absolute consistency of the context.

Option 2: Select to add "non-strict mode" to the API request. In this mode, even if you modify the context, the API will not report a suspension, but will automatically and silently delete the affected thought block from the request.

While this will allow the model to "forget" the specific reasoning process before the next conversation, it will at least ensure that your conversation or task is not interrupted.

It is worth noting that while the rule currently has an exemption period, Anthropic has made it clear that the "reserve thinking" mechanism will apply to all accounts in future model versions!

The current buffer window period is also limited.

Unforeseen Happiness: Benefiting Real People

And this new rule also hides a dramatic decrease in cost and response rate for legitimate developers.

How is this possible?

The key is "context consistency".

In the past, because developers could change the context at will, requests for the model were "completely new" each time they were received.

Now, the new rules force everyone to keep "thinking blocks" and the systemic prompts around them, the historical messages are completely consistent and cannot be tampered with.

This creates a perfect condition technically: a cue-word cache can achieve extremely high-frequency hits!

Now, the API server can easily cache the context of previous conversations directly. When the next round of conversations is requested, the system moves data directly from the cache and completes the matching instantly.

As a result, the API's response time is significantly shortened, the delay line decreases, and the cost of API calls to developers is significantly reduced!

This trick, called "mindless willow", can be said to have been subsidized by real-life developers.

In short, this new rule is undoubtedly a watershed moment for the entire AI industry.

The story of small parameters blowing up a big model may be much less.
