North America’s Job Market in Freefall: A Cornell PhD’s Experience Shows Why Industry Experience Mat

It's the first time in the history of the world.

The North American job market in 2026 is playing a ridiculous black comedy.

According to reports, Dr. Princeton, whose research was cited by the Nobel Prize Committee for Physics, published more than 2,300 resumes and has yet to find a stable full-time job.

图片

Another Dr. Cornell, a Stanford visiting scholar, held hands with Adobe, Meta, and Microsoft's three major companies for internships, but suffered near collapse while applying for a job.

One study of AI solving chemical problems, and one study of AI post-training.

As a result, they were both thrown out of the job market in 2026.

The big cattle in the cutting factory, and the doctor holding the top, are dying in the same pond.

What's even more ironic is that while these top talents were still struggling with an Offer, AI Agents had come into the office on a massive scale, writing code, fixing bugs, handling internal business.

Everyone's eyes are red. But besides the boiling water of death, the cruelest truth is emerging:The most talented candidate didn't have a resume at all, because Agent was already sitting on the job and knocking on the codes.

Recently, a top-notch Dr. Cornell AI (Momo, Jinyan Su) used tens of thousands of words to tear apart the iceberg corner of this job-seeking beach.

Witness entry: U.S. job market is a "dramatic reinforcement learning"

It's a story of magical realism.

The main character is Jack Weis, Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton, graduating in 2024.

In 2022, he co-authored a paper in the peer-reviewed journal PNAS simulating how water can freeze to hundreds of thousands of atoms.

图片

In 2024, the paper appeared in Reference No. 39 of the official scientific background document for the Nobel Prize in Physics, the same year that Hinton won the prize.

图片

Note: he is not a prize winner, nor is he an independent. However, the prize committee is willing to cite that the research is not a waste of water.

According to the old script, this person either continues his research or enters the industry to do AI.

The reality has given him a more ridiculous figure: from 2024 to the present,More than 2,300 job applications are still unstable full-time jobs.

On 17 October, the Wall Street Journal's Lindsay Ellis reported that he had been in prison for two years.

After completing his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical research and development at the National Laboratory, he applied for a job as a radio operator.

Dr. Princeton, who studied complex molecular simulations, found that even chicken cakes didn't get the job.

He threw two years. Most of the stones were in the sea, a few were automatically rejected. The most painful person is not failure, it's you don't even know why you failed.

Work doesn't stop, life can't stop.

In January of this year, he finally made a living. A start-up company hired him for an hourly salary of $70 to write a chemistry essay and score an AI answer. At first he worked about 20 hours a week, then down to 4 hours.

It's a bit cruel to look at it from a distant perspective. The Nobel Committee reviewed his work and saw evidence that AI could change science, and so far the AI industry has sought answers from him for months.

He moved back to Salt Lake City, Utah, to live in the basement of his parents' home.

He didn't give up entirely: preparing for the LSAT, considering a change in the law; while working on drones to clear off invasive weed startups.

Jinyan Su is a "top-notch" in the world of artificial intelligence.

图片

She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Electronics and Technology of China, and was a visiting scholar at Stanford University's computer department in 2025, before earning her Ph.D. in computer science from Cornell University in 2026.

Research directions are also stepping on the hottest nodes at the moment: reinforcement learning, RL, environmental design, post-training after large language models, model safety and alignment.

She has held internships at the Adobe Research Institute, the Meta FAIR department, and the Microsoft Copilot team.

图片

But this is the kind of person who took the "Time Shutdown" script's elite and was poisoned to death in a job search pool in 2026.

In his own words, this job search was not a fair selection of people at all."Extremely noisy reinforcement learning". 。

Her research focuses on reinforcement learning, and she understands the lethal power of this metaphor.

图片

In the world of AI, an agent makes an action and the environment rewards or punishes it. Agents rely on these feedback adjustment strategies to ultimately get through.

But in this job-seeking game, the environment is not only a black box, but also "dramatically toxic".

图片

Zero feedback is the first poison.

You threw out a hundred résumés and the sea sank. I don't know why.

You've done a round of 45-minute interviews, and the answer is flowing, and the next day you get a cold, icy rejection letter.

Is there no better answer to the algorithm question, is there a system design preference for unsuccessful interviewees, or did the company just freeze HC's recruitment numbers yesterday?

No one tells you. You can only try crazy in the dark.

High-noise is the second poison.

The subjectivity of the interviews is largely out of the question.

In her own words, she encountered a variety of disagreements.

Some of the interviewees, with their eyes wide open at the top of the screen, blinked.

What is even more disgraceful is that she wrote code too fast, thought too smoothly, and that interviewers had no reason to suspect that she was "cheating" and scored low.

Your "strength" only accounts for 50% of the results. The remaining 50% is the mood of the day.

This torture is enough to destroy anyone's self-confidence. Being rejected more and more, you begin to doubt your IQ, to doubt whether the last five years of your PhD have been a joke.

But this is precisely the deadliest trap in the game.

People are outside the door, Agent's on duty!

Why is the environment so bad and why is the interviewer so arrogant?

In the post, she describes the plight of the pond: the same-year-old Ph.D. in meteorology, the L6/L7 senior engineer who had just been fired by a major factory, and the long-term observation of the old jumping grounds, all crammed into one race track.

图片

But if we pull the lens away and look outside the pond, we find a more terrifying fact.

The underlying reason for the great setback of this century is not merely large factory layoffs or economic cycles, but the fact that Vampire Agent is fully operational!

图片

In early 2026, the Agency's capabilities began to explode.

At the same time, it could also trigger a mysterious and deadly "employment crisis".

Previously, a core project required two senior architects (L6/L7) with 10 junior secondary engineers (including a PhD and a Master).

Now, the company only needs to retain the two senior architects and give them a powerful cluster of agents.

What is the perfect "candidate" in this new normal?

The pool shrank abruptly, and senior engineers who had previously sat quietly at the site of the large factory were squeezed out and forced downward compatibility.

So the crude food chain is formed:The beef was cut, and the doctor who had just left the campus was forced into the same very narrow passageway to seize the few seats that remained.

The scale went from "numerical paper" to "digitally delivered".

Why did the famous Ph.D.'s ring suddenly go off in this big bull and the doctor's clogged meatloaf?

This is because the scale of AI recruitment has completely changed.

In the past few years, the AI industry has been at its height.

Then the feet shall be called,"The paper".The company buys your "potential" and buys the "top-level talent density" in the PR manuscript.

But in 2026, the tide will recede.

It's the same size as today.Delivery,It's about turning technology into a profitable product at the lowest cost.

At the time, the doctor's deadly shortcuts were uncovered.

In high school, he was accustomed to dying in a very narrow direction of study.

They're used to spending months trying to improve the 2 percent accuracy rate; they're used to writing code as long as they can run through experimental data, even if the underlying code logic is like a rocking hill.

They had deep theoretical breakthroughs, but lacked the "full-time practical warfare experience" in the industry.

And what about the L6/L7s who have been cut down? They close their eyes, they know how to clean up the mess, how to quickly locate and solve online accidents.

In the face of the demands of high-speed transformation and landing in the industry, PhD candidates with no full-time engineering experience have faced an absolute reduction in maintenance.

Without any industry experience, even if you're Dr. Cornell, you're still naked in the eyes of the interviewer.

But don't blame yourself for all the mistakes.

Understanding the rules of the game in the world, while maintaining goodness, raising defensive sticks.

I met a strange interviewer, met a strange rejection, and no longer wanted to be a PUA myself.

It's just that you don't have a tie, you don't have good luck with knowledge, you don't have anything to do with your abilities, you don't have anything to do with your worth.

图片

Let's get to the shore!

How do you survive in this chicken machine?

Combined with numerous encounters and night-long insomnia, Jinyan Su summarizes the three rules of survival with blood.

Rule One: Avoid waiting too long and never be ready for the day.

The most beloved mistake of highly educated people is perfectionism.

In the market in 2026, bad weather is the lifeline. HC is liquid, it's open today, it may be closed tomorrow.

The first point is to be beaten in a real war, to be recovered in an interview."Get to the table first". 。

Rule Two: Refuse blind throwing and use the bullets to "precise sniping".

If you don't want to go to a company at all, or if your salary is very low, even getting an interview is a fake hobby.

The energy is limited, so use it as a bullet.

List the companies that are really willing to go, research their products, dig deep into JD, look inside.

Rule 3: Strictly guard against the traps of startups, with visas and survival above all else

Today, startups with the "AGI is Watching" brand are everywhere.

They prefer to say, "The minimum wage is low, but we give you the option!

This is a very dangerous situation for the people who live there.

First of all,Visa risksThe future of international students is H1B. Startups don't have a mature legal system, and once you have a visa issue, you're just going to walk away.

The second isThe risk of bankruptcyYou can't even pay the rent for next month if you have a worthless option.

The first company, try to be as mature as possible. What you need is code regulation, stable cash flow and reliable visa support. Don't take your only chip and bet on other people's dreams.
