After all this time, we've been giving OpenAI so much value that we're finally getting our money back.
OpenAI has just launched a new benefit for eligible ChatGPT Pro and Business subscribers, who can now get a free API quota of up to $500 per month, and this is not a one-time new user offer, as long as subscriptions and benefits remain in effect, each billing cycle is automatically available.

So, exactly how to lead, who can lead, let's come together and see.
It's a monthly payment of not more than $500.
What exactly is the lead?
Most importantly, this benefit covers ChatGPT Pro and eligible Business users, and subscriptions must be valid for at least 7 days. Plus users, Go, free version, trial period, Enterprise, Edu and older version of Codex are not all on the list.

According to OpenAI's official Help Center and Developer documentation, the specific quota is as follows:

In other words, a developer who would have spent more than $100 a month to modify an API, now a Pro subscription is equivalent to "white delivery".
Business is "people-to-people, but with a cap": each Standard seat adds $20 to the team pool, each Premium seat adds $100, but the entire work area is limited to $500 per month. The official example is: 5 Standard + 3 Premium, the pool is $100 + 300 = $400; 10 Standard + 4 Premium, out of 600, but can only take 500.
What are these quotas that can buy?

Here's another detail that can be easily overlooked: the first amount received may be less than the full monthly quota. This is because OpenAI will distribute a full monthly quota directly based on the remainder of the current subscription cycle, rather than on any given day.

Eligible users can access the ChatGPT account settings, find benefits related to API credits, select their own API Organization (API organization), complete associations and confirm receipts.
Can lead but with restrictions
For developers who actually use APIs, the scope of this benefit is not narrow.
According to the OpenAI documentation, the free allowance can be used to pay for the co-qualified API fees generated by the associated organization, including text- and code-related responses API, relevant interfaces for running the Agent, real-time voice interfaces, image generation and editing, and web page searches, file searches, and built-in tools such as Code Interpreter, and corresponding usage and storage fees.
This means that developers can use the quota for actual application prototypes, Agent workflows and multi-modal product testing rather than just simple chat model calls.
However, there are three limitations that are particularly noteworthy:
First, the free allowance does not support the associated consumption of Codex using the API Key, nor does it increase the upper limit on the use of ChatGPT or the signed-in Codex itself. Therefore, if you purchase a Pro membership primarily to get more Codex programming allowance, don't take the granting API surplus as the number of additional Codex uses directly.
Second, the quota is valid. The monthly grant quota expires at the end of the current subscription fee cycle, and the unused portion cannot be rolled over. For example, if a full fee cycle receives a $200 quota but actually consumes only $30, the remaining $170 will not be transferred to the next month.
Third, free allowance does not mean unlimited calls can be made. OpenAI's request frequency, token rate, model permissions and organizational level restrictions remain valid. No binding API payment method can be used, and an effective grant amount can also be used; but after the balance is used, if there are no other available surpluses, the request will fail due to exhaustion. Organizations that have purchased the API allowance will first consume the grant amount and then consume the amount purchased.
This also means that the so-called "500-dollar free API", which is essentially a limited-use, limited-vailability service, actually saves money depending on how much you would have generated for the API.
One more thing that needs to be emphasized: OpenAI reserves the possibility of future adjustments or cancellations of this benefit in its terms. Therefore, it cannot simply be considered as a permanent membership right.
Why is OpenAI suddenly so big?
Why did OpenAI suddenly start "sending money"? In general, there may be the following reasons:
One of the most understandable reasons is that they want to convert subscriber "direct stream" into an API client.
As a result, the benefit is that every Pro and Business user's API account will always have a surplus. Once you start using that money to build apps, run Agent, and you're in the OpenAI developer ecosystem, that's where it sells Agents APIs, hosts these high-value services. And the rules are very subtle: the monthly allowance is zero, and the surplus is spent, which means you're going to have to "run it out" every month, and the surplus is naturally converted into real silver bullion.

In addition, they are also facing competition from Anthropic and developers' discontent, which could improve this time around.
On October 7, Anthropic announced along with Claude Haiku 5.5 that Claude Max 5x users would send $100 per month API allowance, Max 20x would send $200, and Team plans would pool sharing, up to $500. Three weeks later, OpenAI released its own version: Pro 100 back to 100, Pro 200 back to 200, Business pool cover 500.

A month ago, OpenAI, which cut the Codex and ChatGPT Work allowances for the Pro 200 files from 20 to 10 times (effective on 30 October) while raising the Pro 500 to $500, sparked strong resentment in the developer community. Now the Pro 200 returns the API allowance of $200 a month, which is a bit of a "add-on": the amount of chat and programming is less, but you have more than one API storage card.
After the news was released, many developers revealed the quantity of messages they received, but some also said they did not get it. Specifically, you can explore the QA given by OpenAI.
