As coding enters complex development scenarios such as warehouse modification, modulation, and verification, the industry is increasingly concerned with the supply of training environments, the reliability of feedback execution, and repeatability of experiences. Around these needs, recent work has begun to re-examine the value of existing source code, explore the construction of executable tasks from functional implementations, build verifiable bases, and extract actionable skills.

In addition to being a resource, how can the source code be used for intelligent body training?

1. Currently, the task scope of coding has expanded to software engineering scenarios such as warehouse modification, test execution, and multi-phase modulation. Such tasks involve project file analysis, tool calls, and iterative modification based on feedback execution, prompting the training process of the intelligent body to include consideration of the multi-step interaction with the result verification project environment.[1-1]

2. In order to enable coding intelligent agents to adapt to the expanding mission boundaries, the industry has begun to incorporate real software engineering environments and synthetic terminal tasks into intelligent body training. As the scale of training tasks and warehouse coverage expands, the human inputs, operational resources and reuse conditions in the construction of environments have also become relevant research concerns.

1 In April 2025, the work of SWE-smith classified the large-scale collection of training data as a problem to be solved; in March 2026, the work of daVinci-Env further classified the size of the executable environment, the diversity of warehouses and the cost of construction as training constraints.[1-2] [1-3]

3 Researchers have expanded the use of "source code" around the provision of training environments and operational experiences. In addition to serving as model training material, the source code is also used to build executable tasks, provide behavioral references and extract skills records, and participate in coding intelligence interaction training and follow-up tasks.

1 Previously, improvements in the capability of coding intelligent agents revolved mainly around model training, interaction interfaces and feedback mechanisms. For example, "Codex" uses code content training to generate code models; "SWE-agent" supports warehouse browsing, file editing and execution through dedicated interfaces; and "CodeRL" combines unit testing with functional correctness ratings to optimize code generation.[1-4] [1-5] [1-6]

Early exploration of the functionality of the source code mainly involved the development of records or a combination of existing tests to build training tasks by extracting historical modifications, synthetic code defects, etc. The source code mainly provided the context of the project and the objects to be modified. Recently, some studies have further explored the functional extraction task requirements directly from the source code and used the original implementation to establish a validation basis to allow the source code to participate in the task definition at the same time, develop starting points and execute feedback construction.

1 The R2E-Gym, released in April 2025, describes test and countertranslation tasks from commit to change, with 8135 executable environments. The same month, SWE-smith, released around existing test synthesis defects, constructed about 50,000 instances from 128 warehouses, with strategies including programmatic modification, model generation, fault patch portfolios, and using historical PR's "PR Mirror".[1-2] [1-7]

2 "CodeMidas" uses source code as the only task-specific input, requiring no prior issue, PR, commit changes, test or text specifications. Its process ranges from implementing open interfaces and observable behaviour, removing targets to creating a development starting point, and checking out results through reference solutions and new build tests.[1-8]

Why is source code the largest undeveloped resource?

1. In early explorations in 2025, coding intelligence work is typically combined with development records, with existing test and source code constructing executable warehouse-level tasks that occur in training instances through historical modification extraction, fault synthesis or test drive. In these cases, the source code primarily provides the context of the project and the objects to be modified, while the task solving trajectory is used for model training...
